I am interested to get feedback on the use of SMS micro-payments as a way to trial games before converting customers to more traditional payment methods. I currently work for a company that offers an SMS micro-payment billing solution and have received mixed reviews from various gaming companies. We have a number of clients/partners that have implemented our billing solution which has produced tremendous results. As the solution is virtually risk and cost free I am interested in understanding why it is not viewed as a great way to attract new customers and increase revenues - especially amongst the youth demographic.

What exactly are the details of micro-payments billing?
It works like this:
1. An end-user wants to access restricted online content, make a purchase, buy a life line, buy game tokens, convert cash to virtual world cash or just make a contribution donation on your website.
2. He/She sends a simple text message to a premium short code, and receives a password (and/or username) on his mobile phone. This text message is automatically billed on the user’s mobile phone account.
3. The end-user enters the password on your website, and accesses the content for a predefined period of time or receives credits/tokens/items purchased.

The price of the premium sms can/will be different amount depending on the country/carrier.
Matthew, the core problem with SMS billing is that the carrier surcharge takes 50-70% of the SMS cost, at least it's the case for the CIS.
